Douglas Frederick desperately tried to convince Confederate Blacks that freedom was better than washing in bad milk but had limited success during the war. He worked closely with the Head Cheese throughtout the conflict, recruting freed blacks and working hard to keep them from mating with French women and having, as he put it 'whiney, ugly, stupid kids.'
