Recently there seems to have been some discussion about abstains and comments on VFH. How about doing all the comments and abstains on the talkpage and putting something like Please put any comments on this nomination's talkpage in the Comments box. Abstains would automatically be accompanied with some short, or not so short, comment as putting a commentless abstain on a discussion page would just be stupid. Consequently, the drama template could also be changed to something like "Please keep all your comments civil, dammit!" instead of the current "As of now, you are only allowed to vote For, Against or Pie. People who post any further comments at this page will be banned!" (since well, all the commenting and discussing would already be going on at a discussion page). Is this a good idea? A bad idea? I would be fine with making people stop commenting on voting pages. Usually it just gives them the opportunity to say something dumb or reveal that they missed the point of the article. Comment MOAR RULES PLZ. But srsly, I agree with my esteemed colleague Mr. Phoenix here. Don't discussions on comments usually end up going to talk pages anyways? If a discussion needs to take place, most people know that the talk page is the appropriate place to do it, and if not then somebody needs to redirect them (as they sometimes do). Let's do this

Keeping with what Socky's proposal is going for, but changing it a bit, how about we add the following to the VFH rules:

“ Only actual For or Against votes may be placed in those voting sections. All comments which are not votes should be made in the comments box only. Any comment made in either the For or Against sections which is not a vote may be removed from the page. ”

I think that does what we want, and should not stop most people using VFH as they always have. What I want to reduce is the practice of people commenting under negative votes and starting a load of old nonsense. This will also keep the voting sections free from clutter which is not voting. Note it says "may be removed". If it's a funny comment in the for box who is going to care, but... Unless someone gives me a good reason not to add this rule I will add it in a few days per UN:N. Well it just smells a bit like censorship in my opinion. I don't honestly see what's wrong with long discussions - even arguments - on the voting page other than they look a bit ugly. Perhaps it would be better to use the talk page, but, few people but the author, maybe the nominator, bother to watch the pages themselves. We actually have that already in the rules, remember - "THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION PAGE". I just say - enforce that with bans, and people will get use to it. I don't think we need to add more rules. ~ 16:39, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Yea, it does say that. What I'm suggesting is some clarification (for me anyway). For me it would be a lot more clear cut if this rule was added and everyone agreed to it. I could then warn people who ignored it (pointing them to the rule) and then ban them if they ignored it again. I think a lot of people have never read the rules, and I don't really want to block someone if they did not know it was not allowed. But... I think if this was enforced I think it would cut down a lot of the drama we get on VFH. If people still want to comment they can use the comments section, or the talk page of the user. I should clarify... I'm not suggesting that we can't do what we normally do when we vote. That's fine. Vote as per normal, leaving your reason for voting as per normal. What I'm saying is that once you have voted, after that if you want to say anything further it's got to be in the comments section, or the users talk page. MrN  Fork you! 18:27, Aug 15
