Uncyclopedia has had many different events in the past, mostly writing competitions, but not only. Some of them we still host (such as the PLS or the Happy Monkey) and some of which we have forgotten about. My idea is to create a planner of the events we would like to have every year with their exact dates, so that there is at least one every season and there is at least a month between two different ones.

The benefits
It will...
  • ... make it more difficult to miss any specific event, even if you don't visit Uncyclopedia regularly.
  • ... be possible to sign up in advance.
  • ... reduce the chances of us forgetting to organize something.
  • ... increase the amount of events we host annually, most of which are very important for the growth of Uncyclopedia.

And here is my list of all the events that ever took place on Uncyclopedia and some information about each - User:Anton199/Events. If you find an event I have missed, please, add it to my list!

The most interesting ones to discuss are those which we have stopped organizing, because concerning the rest, they already take place regularly... or almost regularly. So to help create this planner, could you, please, vote for or against different events (which we don't organize any longer) to see which ones we should put inside it? Uncyclopedia:Aristocrat's Turkey Day Ball

Description: a writing contest that values tasteless articles, as far as I understand.

Description: A writing contest, where participants choose their own topic among the list of requested articles

Symbol for vote.svg For. — Yes, Romartus, being on UN:REQ only means that one Uncyclopedian has stuck it on the list (so that someone else will write an article that the original guy is probably more of an expert on) (and I've seen a guy stick a subject on UN:REQ and then go on to write the article); it does not mean that they are "important for this site to have." Pee Buddy Awards (held only once)

Description: an UnNews article-writing contest
  1. Symbol for vote.svg For. New UnNews articles are displayed on our main page and are a criterion by which users can judge how updated we are on modern events. And my guess is that they are also the articles most of our general audience will be mostly interested in. That's why, in my opinion, we should encourage the writing of UnNews'es and the Pee Buddy Awards accomplishes it perfectly. Anton (talk) 13:27, August 15, 2014 (UTC)

Hourly writing contest

Description: its title basically summarizes it

Not sure if this competition adds to the quality of our articles, due to its short duration, but it might be an interesting event for users, who won't edit Uncyclopedia many days in a row - which our other competitions, such as PLS, require. This could be good practice for new writers who are under the mistaken impression that an article takes about 15 minutes (or even only five!) to write. Uncyclopedia:Conservation Week

Description: Participants rewrite as many random articles as they can and are judged on the quantity and quality.

Random page has traditionally been one means of finding bad articles to fix up, but the competition usually makes it clear that it does not have to be found randomly if it is a bad article you've been meaning to fix. Also, it should be clear in the rules that you do not *have* to rewrite the first page you find at random. Pee Week

Description: Participants review as many articles as they can and are judged on their quantity and in-depth.

Uncyclopedia:Forest Fire Week

Description: a maintenance week, when users tag as many low quality articles as they can find, and if those are not brought over to VFD, where they are voted kept, all of these articles are deleted without any votes or community discussion.

Humour is often subjective, as articles you don't find funny might be hilarious for someone else, and, in addition, articles that are possibly not FA-quality now may become such with some of work. The Forest Fire Week is an extremely easy mean to delete all those and is a good way to create plenty of red links, which will require a lot of efforts to be blue again. However, I am not against it as such, especially if it takes place after the Conservation Week. Anton (talk) 13:45, August 15, 2014 (UTC)

  3. Symbol against vote.svg Against. VFD works, if everyone voting here would go over and vote there. (Heck, if so, even VFH would work!) And if everyone finding a junk article would nominate it. (There is no recent clamor for the limit on ballots to be raised above 20.) From time to time we hear that our plethora of junk articles is turning off the reader. (On off days, we hear that our plethora of guidelines to prevent junk articles is turning off the author.) VFD assures everyone that they can try to protect their work with an appeal to voters. In theory, FFW is a way to get a large swath of bad articles deleted; in practice, it is a way to get a large swath of random articles deleted, which may or may not be bad and frequently include some rather good ones. VFD works much better because more editors are expected to express an opinion, rather than the decision being made by one editor who tags the article and one administrator who deletes it -- the latter of whom may well be the same person as the tagging editor, and both of whom are expected to be tagging and deleting as many articles in as little time as possible. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 22:50, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

    I was somehow under the impression that the score being recorded under a vote was a sign that it was closed, since I had seen a closed vote elsewhere that was like that and I notice that not all the votes here have scores, but I don't see anywhere that it means that so I'll take you at your word. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr • talk • contribs • 00:43, August 23, 2014 (UTC)

Other comments

  • It would be nice if there were always some event to look forward to. (It would also keep the UnSignpost filled up no matter what appears on Google Images and in the trade press.) It would be a chore if there were so many of these that editing here were structured. I haven't participated in competitions since the 2009 Poo Lit Surprise, as I write when the Muse hits me; being funny on command results in not-as-funny. Spıke Ѧ 23:53 20-Aug-14
  • Omitted from this list is competitions where the format is the one used in our most recent competition: A committee picks articles that we don't have (or that are very bad and no one is showing any sign of doing anything about) and that we need (as opposed to someone having typed it into UN:REQ) and you get ample time (more than 1 hour) to do it up right, for formal judging and review. Seeing the results so far, there probably won't be an overflow of these competitions. We already have PLS and HMC about every year and this forum will maybe add two or three more to this list. Do you think one every season would be a good idea? Anton (talk) 13:48, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

Result

You are welcome to add votes or comments, if you have any, but I think we can already determine the result with the existing ones. The events to be held are The Article Whisperer, Uncyclopedia Summer Extravaganza and the Pee Week. Considering that we have to keep on hosting PLS and that the Wiki World Cup may take place in 2015, the rest of the 2014 and 2015 will be very interesting for Uncyclopedia editors.
