Perfect. A phone booth in the middle of a supermarket aisle. The framing, the backdrop, everything about it screams one thing to you: art world recognition. Whipping out your trusty sketchbook and pencils, you set to work creating what you are certain will be your masterpiece.

Unfortunately, your actual artistic skills don't nearly match your artistic aspirations. In the final work, you completely fail to make sure the angles of the phone booth line up with the aisle, the colors don't look right at all, the items on the shelf appear to be inside the phone booth thanks to a few depth mistakes, and the woman further down the aisle... well, you were never good at drawing human subjects anyway. A month later with the painting on display at a local museum, your original plans to invent the artistic movement of "authentic surrealism" are dashed when your work is described most aptly as a farcical facsimile of modern life, with the phone booth in the aisle representing the advent of cellular telephones invading every corner of our waking days.

But hey, they actually like it, and you're not too picky. Job well done.

But wait...

You feel a tremendous wrench – the hand of God coming down to wipe clean the temporal chalkboard. The world dissolves, and then quickly floods back into existence, restoring its state as it was before you made your move.

But somehow, things aren't set up exactly the same as last time....

Late Thursday night. You've had a hard day and the last thing you need is this: shopping. Luckily, the place is pretty empty and you're progressing rapidly.

On to the next aisle.

The aisle stretches to the north, and back to the south. The shelves on either side of you block your view of the rest of the supermarket, with only the brightly colored aisle markers visible.

You have stopped your trolley next to the pasta section, bright plastic bags full of pale skin-tone shapes.

There is a brunette woman a few meters ahead, filling her trolley with sauces.

A shiny metal phone booth sits in the center of the aisle.
