MUMBAI, INDIA -- Not so long ago, people in Mumbai boasted the city was open round the clock. It might be safe to call Las Vegas and Amsterdam its sister cities. Now young people complain nightlife has become deadly dull.

The government began its drive last year against bars and clubs, saying they corrupted young people. Currently, the government personnel is slowly being replaced by muslim traditionalists.

The state government's argument is that dance bars and discos are breeding grounds for prostitution and crime. According to islam, all women must obey men, and not allow themselves to be seen in public, especially after nightfall when evil lurks around every corner.

"Really we are only protecting our women, and we feel that our islam rulers of the Arabian peninsula will find this pleasing."

But many were still apprehensive, fearing the state government might impose other bans or bring forward a recent curfew on bars and clubs.

To get round the curbs, many fun-seeking night birds now organise their own private parties to liven up the nightlife.

Recently, I invited myself over to one.
