Brand new talk page[edit]

General answer: When you are redirected to another page, there is very small print in the upper-left corner advising you of that fact. Click on it, and you can go to, instead of through, the redirect. Once there, you can edit it to no longer be a redirect. Spıke Ѧ 19:55 8-Mar-14

Diolch. Keeping the old pic though--Sog1970 (talk) 20:01, March 8, 2014 (UTC)

Good to see you on the voting pages! When are you going to write another splendid article? Surely you could go for 75.5 features? --Chiefjustice3DS 09:13, April 23, 2014 (UTC)

Did you say you were working on a version of the Periodical Tables? I am reading the Periodic Tales by Hugh Aldersey-Williams. Did that inspire you or did you encourage the author to get his version out before yours?? --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 15:07, June 14, 2014 (UTC)

I did. But I kind of ran out of steam. Still like to fiish it one day though. --Sog1970 (talk) 18:57, June 17, 2014 (UTC)
I know it is a typo but I like the idea of 'Fish' being in the Periodical Tables. Perhaps we could 'knock' this idea around more now that I know everything up to Oxtail Soup (as discovered by Lux Lavosier, the French inventor of scented soap.) --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 22:18, June 18, 2014 (UTC)
I thought this guy invented soap. Well, maybe not scented soap, but that would be a good addition. Sog, please come back and give us more, more, of your pages. Or at least one more. For now, we would be content with one more. Hope things are going well, and much to do. Aleister 13:25 19-6-14

Boko Harum[edit]

This not being a Latin genitive plural, I suggest you Move it to Boko Haram, which is how I usually see it spelled. Don't QVFD the old name, if people think it's the right way. Spıke Ѧ 17:57 19-Jun-14

I would but it's Boko Harum as in Procul Harum rather than Haram as in firbidden.--Sog1970 (talk) 18:01, June 19, 2014 (UTC)

You are saying "Harum" is part of the joke? Having a joke for a page title forces the reader to guess your joke in order to read your joke. Instead, make the page title what the reader is likely to type, then use {{Title}} to change the displayed title once the reader gets to the page. Spıke Ѧ 18:09 19-Jun-14

There is already a Boko Haram article. You want me to overwrite it?--Sog1970 (talk) 18:15, June 19, 2014 (UTC)

Oh! sorry; I certainly don't want you to do that. However, the 2012 article is ranty and overtly anti-Muslim, while yours is playful, though the text gets dense in places and should be broken up with a bit more graphics. I'll open a VFD ballot proposing to replace the old one with yours. Spıke Ѧ 18:25 19-Jun-14

Soggy crackers[edit]

Is it worth saving from the shredder? --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 14:32, August 12, 2014 (UTC)

Well, it doesn't do much for me in its current form and I think if I edited it that would be a bit narcissistic. I've seen worse though. Surprisingly few references to the old boys boarding school game if soggy biscuit.

The Doctor is IN[edit]

I have nommed this to be featured. Come on Soggy, at least stay one ahead of Alesterical? --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 21:44, September 10, 2014 (UTC)

The Who[edit]

Invasive species[edit]

All right, the VFD vote is closed, get to work. In fact, the way VFD works is that you can improve an article while we are voting on it. If I should delete it from failing to see you were working on it, I would gladly undo the deletion or at worst move it to your userspace so you could continue. (Why the capital S in Species?) Spıke Ѧ 14:51 5-Jan-15

Please note the minor name change! Spıke Ѧ 02:09 6-Jan-15

Your rewrite of Invasive species is now noted on the main page. Likewise, you could work on Wind after, or even during, the vote. In any case, go back into VFD and fix the vote count! Spıke Ѧ 19:52 7-Jan-15

Little Adolf's School Report[edit]

Wiki yam states on the talk page that the date of the School Report is counter-factual. As one year number is no funnier than another, I suggest you follow his recommendation and change it to be realistic given Hitler's birthdate. Spıke Ѧ 04:21 25-Jan-15

Done. Although the idea of leaving a stranger fuming about an irrelevant detail in a four year old item appeals quite a bit.--Sog1970 (talk) 16:00, January 25, 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, and point well-taken, though the "appeal" is to amusing yourself at the reader's discomfort (no matter how valid), to which I have always preferred amusing the reader. Spıke Ѧ 16:34 25-Jan-15

UnNews:Turkey invades Syria to "protect lives of dead guys"[edit]

I tightened up some of the wording and did House Style stuff, such as capitalizing the city name and throwing in some categories. Your parenthetical note in the second paragraph is a complete sentence, making the surrounding paragraph very hard to read; perhaps break this down? Also, on my first read, this came across as more judgemental than funny and it took a couple reads to see what you were getting at; maybe give this a fresh read too. Spıke Ѧ 00:39 23-Feb-15

UnNews:UK sent into raptures by birth of baby girl [edit]

Baba O'Riley[edit]

The webcaster at the ballpark last night was the only guy in the house who knew that this was the song's actual name. Baba lacked a biography on Uncyclopedia, but my new stub has no particular comedy strategy. Please expand it if you have a better one! Spıke 🎙️16:17 11-Aug-16

I tried. Not sure it's any better but I'm rather out of practise--Sog1970 (talk) 10:47, August 16, 2016 (UTC)

You fleshed it out a bit with material of interest to its likely audience. It could still be a springboard to something greater. Return to it if something strikes you.

PS--Speaking of music, Billy Joel has just turned up on VFD. It is heavy on babble, but the author had a real comedy strategy (play off song titles) that you might be able to do better. Spıke 🎙️11:46 16-Aug-16

Glad you found your way back in! "Worth waiting 5 years"? Yeah, but imagine all the stuff you could have done in the meantime. A couple style issues:

  • It would fit better if it were more an encyclopedia article and less a speech; drop the editorial we, "our" world, "our" merry isle, etc.
  • Even at UnNews, we have mostly dropped Zim_ulator's in-joke of outrageous overuse of typography, so I thought quotations with quotation marks .AND. italics .AND. boldfacing was "over-the-top." Cheers! Spıke 🎙️14:56 22-Jan-21

Soggy, when you notice a page that could link to your new work, perhaps in Special:RecentChanges because it is being vandalized, could you also remove the vandalism? In view of that fancy hat we just gave you? This one's done (and banned (and edits patrolled)), cheers! Spıke 🎙️17:12 18-Mar-21

Postman Pat[edit]

Brilliant concept, please move it to mainspace ASAP and continue development there! Odd, I see nothing in the Move Log, though I presume you took this over from Funnybony? Spıke 🎙️21:56 23-Mar-21

No, just used an old User space thing that Bony and I did years ago, and then deleted that to start writing something new in it. It's very, very unfinished at present Sog1970 (talk) 22:01, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
I think there's at least a couple more episodes in it but I'm too tired to think now so it'll have to wait. I'll move it when it's more complete.Sog1970 (talk) 22:18, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Okay, you moved it to mainspace at Postman Patton and I created Postman Pat to redirect to it. I think it should be the other way around:

  • The user types "Postman Pat" and "Postman Patton" comes up, pretty funny. Or,
  • The user types "Postman Patton" — Wait, no, he doesn't. You don't type in a joke to see if someone has written an article around that joke. This is the usual case where we force the reader to type the punch line to read the joke! Please do it the other way around! If you want the page to self-identify as "Postman Patton", we have commands to get this to happen. Spıke 🎙️22:00 6-Apr-21

I recall CBC holding a competition to complete the sentence: “As Canadian as...” The winning entry was “ is possible to be under the circumstances.” I’m not that Canadian. In fact I’m mostly Canadian during the Winter Olympics, English-ish (though I rarely admit it) during the World Cup, Welsh if there’s any decent Rugby on, and British the rest of the time. My son adds Motswana to that list when the African Cup of Nations is on.Sog1970 (talk) 20:50, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

You're right. Hadn't noticed. Eyes going for all the repetitive cahnges I've made.Sog1970 (talk) 19:53, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Then it appears you saw there was a page on Gallium and called yours "Gallium." with a period. I scooped out all the good stuff into the page with the conventional name.

Also managed to make three-quarters of your code in Template:Periodic table disappear with no loss of function. Whenever you find yourself engaged in such repetition, you ought to ask one of us if you are doing something wrong! (I have solutions, but not the conceptual basis to understand exactly why they sometimes don't work. Dark Web and Llwy also know this material, some of it better than I do.)

For starters, whenever you find yourself coding identical code in many pages, the instant solution is a template. You put the payload in one page in the Template: userspace, then make it appear in the other pages by typing its page name in double squiggly braces.

Inside the table:

  1. Think about writing general rules instead of specific commands.
  2. You will find it easier if you code HTML, or Wikitable ({|), but not both.
  3. In a Wikitable, some commands can be issued on a per-table or per-line basis and don't have to be repeated for each cell.

One example: Your coding of the periodic table meant that the box color shaped itself around the text of that box. The table dictated a fixed spacing between cells, but the coding of each cell didn't extend the background color to the cell boundary, so the fixed spacing didn't matter.

I don't mean to criticize but to encourage you to ask for advice when engaged in a task that seems excessively repetitive; there is often a solution. Spıke 🎙️03:02 16-Apr-21

Oh, cheers! I was wondering why you thought none of my kibitzing was useful! The photo of "Otto von Bismuth" I found via search, and reused it in the resuscitated article on Bismuth. Spıke 🎙️18:05 20-Apr-21

Swan song on VFH[edit]

I broke your signature here a couple days ago (and everyone else's) because something about one of them, probably a vertical bar, was breaking the summary table. Dark Web, White Hat has been looking into it. The table is now broken in a different way. Spıke 🎙️13:40 30-Apr-21

Our incipient Admin clarified that I broke the table myself by working User:Frosty/list of templates that are probably useless and deleting a required template. Spıke 🎙️22:52 1-May-21

Sorry, I reverted you here. The American vs. British spelling doesn't exist in Phosphorus as it does in Sulfur [sic]; to the point, way down on the page, when the article moves to Cadillac, Michigan, you would have the article contradicting itself; no Yank lunch counter patron asks for a "Fosfate," so it's a dead end in the Intro. Spıke 🎙️22:50 1-May-21

it isn’t a “point”. I’m aware that no one uses Fosforus, as I’m sure everyone else is. Just an unexplained joke at the inconsistency of American English spelling when those of us using correct spelling so often have to put up with Americans moaning about “unnecessary” U’s in colour etc. Do what you wish. It has no meaning, is not linked to Sulphur, just an aside that could be taken as random or not as anyone chooses. It wasn’t intended to lead anywhere or be a correction or an assertion of an actual fact. Sog1970 (talk) 10:15, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
