Summary[edit]
Vincent Van Gogh, Self Portrait 1888(winter) Oil on cardboard
Penniless and alone, Van Gogh's clinical depression and self-obsession drove him to create a series of self-portraits, of which this is an illustrative example. Although similar to many of his works, this painting is known as the "Lost Van Gogh" for the insight it gives into the starving artist's fragile psyche. Curiously, its completion coincides with the seizure, or "mental distress", Van Gogh suffered just prior severing his earlobe on 24 December.
