This is a documentation subpage for Template:Welcome.
It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page.
To view the template page itself, see Template:Welcome.

{{Welcome}} is designed to make it easy for any Uncyclopedian to welcome a new user.

It is not mandatory to use this template. Some Uncyclopedians have custom Welcome messages to better fit their own style. Custom messages should include the major points of {{Welcome}} as well as {{Writing funny stuff}}, a handy directory of Uncyclopedia's basic help pages.

Changes to {{Welcome}} will be automatically applied to every user talk page ever welcomed with it.[1] The user will receive no notification that their welcome message changed, and will typically never notice it. However, this method ensures that any obsolete information in {{Welcome}} (such as pointers to reference pages that have ceased to exist) can be purged throughout Uncyclopedia.

Recent custom on Uncyclopedia is to welcome users only after they have made contributions (creating a user page or a framework for a user talk page counts).

Usage

Create a user talk page for the new user and, at the top or after anything the new user has typed there, type:

{{Welcome}} ~~~~

Notes:

  1. If your signature file includes a timestamp and you sign posts with three tildes, do so here too.
  2. {{Welcome}} creates a second-level section head named Welcome!. (This section is missing its [edit] button because clicking it would take an editor to this template instead.)[1]
  3. A personal welcome, which typically comments on the new user's contributions, is especially reinforcing. You'd typically create a follow-on second-level section head for this.

Footnote

  1. 1.0 1.1 Some users prefer to welcome a user with:
    {{subst:Welcome}} ~~~~

This copies the current contents of the {{Welcome}} template right into the new user's talk page. The text will not change if {{Welcome}} changes later. The odd behavior noted above when section-editing the new talk-page section does not occur.
