Accra is the capital of Ghana, the most commercial city in Ghana (and the only city in Ghana that's ever actually taken seriously), and the richest but messiest place anyone has ever seen.

Accra is in the Greater Accra Region and lies in the middle of the Region. The place is packed with 5 million people (I bet not many of them can fit inside your house?). The city has tried too hard to make it look like Toronto. But it's an ok city. Tall buildings, lovely restaurants, 1,000 cedi worth hotels and beautiful views at night time.

History[edit]

This apartment complex is called Villagio although it's in the middle of a city. It features plush carpet, but on the outside wall rather than on the floors.

The language of Accra is Ga, one of Earth's less creative languages, as the inhabitants are also referred to as the Ga people, and the name of the city, in Ga, is Gaga (or Gãgã if you have a head cold). The mayor is Lady Gaga.

Ga refers to soldier ants and is based partly on the large ant-hills in the plains around the city, and partly on the people's tendency to swarm downtown and find something that looks edible and drag it back to their home; also to obey orders of Authorities and not ask questions. The comparison to fierce ants was motivational when the Ga took on the suburbanites who spoke Guang, during the First Language War.

The Ga language is part of the Kwa family, a nondescript African language with not a huge amount of clicking noises. It is spoken in two tones, and students who skip out of music class will be disappointed all their lives when the waitress delivers the wrong food to the table. Ga has three vowel lengths, Short, Long, and Oh My God. They are denoted by repeating the letter. Ga is the only language on Earth where aaaaaaaa is actually a word.

The specific dialect spoken in Accra is Ga-Dangme. A Roger Miller song by that name won a Grammy award in 1964 as the best hit in the genre of Country & Western Africa.

Activities[edit]

Apartment life is made simpler when only one of the tenants owns a car.
  • Food — Accra is also a nice tourist site; so continental food is always around. Pizza, KFC, you name it. Oh uh, don't name McDonald's because that company wants nothing to do with Ghana. You heard that right! No McDonald's! Get something else to eat. You can however get Burger King. And you're in luck because there are only 2 places you'd find it. Accra and Teshie. If you pass the Accra mall feeling hungry go over there and ask a security guard about it (if he's not sleeping). I think there's also one near the Marina Mall.
  • Clothes — They usually dress like normal people and yes, you can buy yourself a nice little dress or an outfit to wear for at least GH¢45 (That's a bit cheap for you Americans). You can also find bracelets, swimming costumes and accessories to buy. Though it won't be too expensive please make sure you don't buy the whole store or you'll get lots of stares.
  • People — Overall the people are very friendly (to you but not to each other) and are very funny with a mother tongue of twi. They have a good sense of humor and love their country so. They are very interested in politics but they're still nice.
  • Shipping — Accra used to have an impressive port that received goods for the entire nation. However, in 1961, a large new port opened up next door in Tema, offering ships the attractive option of approaching the docks without scraping bottom.

Deciding whether to visit[edit]

You will also be missing out on this beautiful monument built about 70 years ago. So, have you changed your mind now? I hope so.

Absolutely! Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise! Accra is the awesomest city in Africa. You'd be missing out on a lot if you didn't spend at least a week there. It'd be unforgivable. Maybe you'll make up your mind after seeing this picture below?
