Well, this comment got me thinking about Uncyc and it's attitude to ED again. Firstly, let me point out this isn't about an against vote on an image of mine; it's about this blanket denial that anything that ED might have done could ever be funny. ^  And that's bullshit. My confession to you is this: In addition to having been here on Uncyc for over three years, I am also an EDiot and a /b/tard. I like some elements of the humour that I find on both (and frankly, both have elicited larger laughs from me than Uncyclopedia has managed to recently). I'm not into their trolling or the more puerile stuff I find on either, but occasionally there's something so immediately hilarious that I just can't help myself. It's been a while since Uncyc actually caused that kind of involuntary reaction.

Anyway, it seems that this false polarisation still continues; if a joke is seen to have "originated" on ED or on "one of the other sites that we're so very much better than" (or even to have *gasp* something in common with them), it is dismissed out of hand. This is akin to sitting stone-faced through a performance by a comedian that you've decided that you don't like and supressing the amusement that an occasional joke makes you feel. I can't stand Little Britain for example, but there have been times where it's been on, and it managed to make me laugh - against my will, sure, but they just did something funny. I'd feel like a right prick if I tried to deny that to myself.

"But ED is full of trolls, shock images, racism and retarded humour", you cry. Yeah. But you know what? It doesn't pretend any different, and that's somewhere where it wholly trumps Uncyclopedia. When you visit ED you know exactly what you're getting. Here, we're just painting a quasi-intellectual inclusive veneer over everything, while at the same time sniping, gossiping and caballing behind each others' backs; and then acting surprised when the result of any community initiative is either inaction or drama.

I'm not sure why I started writing this anymore. I guess at first it was to point out the hypocrisy of criticising sites that we see as "beneath us" when we're incapable of keeping our own house in order. All I know is that these days it's much more fun to be an anon with no responsibilities than to have people bugging me about shit all the time. This isn't a "goodbye" message, I'm still here. Just as a reply, I have never worked on the assumption that we were somehow comparible. Although I've often heard you say we are. Thats not a dig, its just that I don't get ED - and I have to say I could feel no pride in contibuiting to such a site. I've been guilty of the occasional "sub-ED crap" comment on VFD, so I guess I'm one of the ones in the Codeine sights here. Thing is, I think partly because of the trolling, ED is pretty much lazy shorthand round here for certain types of memey, listy, shock unfunny stuff. I don't actually feel that strongly about it myself, being of the opinion that the two sites have somewhat different aims, and if people prefer one or the other, that's their decision, and they're welcome to make it. I've chuckled at maybe one or two things on ED, although the shock and so forth keeps me from frequenting it regularly. I also happily chuckle at ?pedia, although it's not the kind of stuff I feel comfortable writing. I agree we can't criticise other sites for being beneath us - maybe we need to fall out of that shorthand. And just as Codeine wasn't sure what his point was, I'm not sure what the point of this response is, except that we need to remember to enjoy this place, and not take it too seriously, or we'll end up with nothing happening. I don't care about ED. If I was an EDite, I probably would. Then, I wouldn't be here. Instead, I'd be there not caring about here. I would, however, still be naked, but that's a given. I want my own heading

So I guess this is something I'm guilty of so I'll put my two peneth worth in... And funnily enough, Little Britain is a good analogy for me too. It's very possible that some things on that show would make me laugh. But the first time I watched it I was nearly sick during a particularly gross joke (I'm not good with the idea of bodily fluids in food, even typing this I'm feeling nauseous). So I've not ever watched it again... it's just not my thing, and I don't want to go there.

ED is similar. I've had good relationships with admins there, and with people I know are users there, but there are some things on that site that I find so offensive that I don't want to have anything to do with the site. In one case I was literally brought to tears over a page where site members documented their horrific bullying and (imo) sexual assault of a man with a serious disability (God, this makes me sound like a right pansy, throwing up and crying over everything I see.... but this was my genuine reaction)

That's not to say I'm not sometimes offended by things on Uncyc, and I'm not saying there is nothing funny on ED. I'm sure there is. But I don't like shock humour. I don't like that some groups and individuals online are unable to see that those on the other side of the screen are real and can be seriously hurt. I'll laugh at someone slipping on a banana, I won't laugh at someone losing their job and marriage because they fell for a fake advert on Craig's List.

So... I'm not sure how well connected all that is with what Codeine said. I agree that it's silly to dismiss a joke because it originated at ED or /b/ (which I haven't mentioned much, because I hardly know the site). I don't want to go anywhere near the extremes of their humour, but I don't dismiss everything they do by any means. But the harm that they can do at their worst is certainly something I want to think of myself as "above". It's certainly something I hope I am above. I'm in agreement with Codeine and Sannse (partly to avoid bannination if I don't toe the party line). I personally dislike ED - there's some funny stuff there, but there's also a lot of very unpleasant articles, racism, bullying, trolling and no end of other rot. As a result of which, I don't visit it. On the other hand, there's no need to dismiss the image as unworthy simply because something similar exists there. RabbiTechno 12:49, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

It's true. On the whole I hate ED because it's just plain mean, a really bad school bully. I will admit that some stuff on there is quite funny (I found the article on 'Illogicopedia' humorous) but it's trumped by the other crud that goes on there (promoting bullying, general arsing about with peoples' minds) which is really not to my taste. The attacking ED is more of a meme/ in-joke than an actual statement about ED's quality. It's similar to our mocking of wikipedia because our articles sometimes are less indecent than their articles on the same subject. ED is funny at times, and is mildly useful when you want to find out about an internet meme. That is, when your not overwhelmed by the child pr0n and the cyber bullying. Oh, the pr0n ads are really annoying too.
There is some stuff on this site that I do find offensive, like blasphemous articles (and by blasphemy, I mean blasphemy against my God, blasphemy against other gods is freaking hilarious). I avoid being offended constantly by not clicking on links to the various Jesii. (I find that much more effective than the more common method of having hissy fits in the talk page of said articles) There is also some other stuff where I think uncyclopedia holds back too much, like on racism. And I sure everybody else can find areas where the uncyclopedia policy is either too offensive or not offensive enough.--Mnbvcxz 17:33, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
