Recently, I nominated UnBooks:The Complete Idiot's Guide To Talking To Women for highlighting on the front page, and it got some opposition from people who were against featuring UnBooks. I've noticed it before with nominated UnNews articles as well. My question is: are all pages eligible for highlighting on the front page? I propose that we resolve this issue, and depending upon the resolution, state on the top of the VFH page what pages can or cannot be nominated. See the discussion on the VFH talk page here. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 01:46, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

All pages from those namespaces are eligible. Until being "Featured UnBook" or "Featured UnNews Story" means anything, they will remain eligible. The end. —rc (t) 01:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Featured unbook and Featured unnews story will never mean anything for as long as they're still accepted on vfh - jack mort | cunt | talkKodamaIcon.jpg - 02:07, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
...it might help UnBooks take off if the UnBooks votey links were in the "Limelight" section of the {{awardpage}} template.--Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 02:17, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Even if Featured UnBooks and UnNews did mean anything, it would still be a much higher honor to be on the front page and the featured "overall" article. Voting against an article with the reason of "This is an UnNews article" or "This is an UnBook" is about the shittiest thing someone can say on that page, and if it were up to me these votes would be discounted in favor of other votes with legitimate reasoning. Amen to that. Personally, I think the front page should feature great writing of any genre — the current favourite article, regardless of which project it comes from. Writers shouldn't feel constrained to write within certain areas just to have a shot at some exposure. I like writing a variety of stuff, and I'm certainly not alone. Roaming space keeps creativity flowing. If someone feels like writing a poem, a news story, or a fake book and it's well received, why shouldn't it be front and centre? And doesn't that variety also make the front page more interesting to the readers? ~ T. (talk) 02:38, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. I wasn't saying that Unbooks etc shouldn't be VFHable, I was forwarding an idea to help Unbooks, which seem buried away in the nether regions at the moment. Ghettoized, if you will. It will take a while for Unbooks to get the respect that they deserve no matter what (Horton+Ho and Putz notwithstanding).--Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 02:35, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, and my comment was necessarily directed toward you, in fact it wasn't really directed toward anyone. Also, what Todd said is very relevant, we shouldn't have a system that forces authors to write in a certain style in order to gain notability. • Well, (cough cough) I have a vested interest in allowing UnNews stories to be featured. And I cast votes for Horton Hires A Ho and the Putz Who Stole Hannukkah. If they're good enough, wherever they come from, they'll make it through the VFH process. While additional features on the front page would be nice, it would also make our front page look less like Wikipedia. And isn't our whole purpose to be a satire of that thing? Yes to UnNews and UnBooks voting rights; no to additional boxes on the front page.--Procopius 02:36, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Short answer: yes. Long answer: yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssss! Spang talk 02:50, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

my opinion

in summary, in one place, to cut down on repetition

first we need an unnews voting page thing, that's a 5 minute job

unnews is already a column almost as large as - and beside - the main section. all you need it a featured unbook/vote for unbooks box below the two and above featured picture, which is only the same few looping at the moment anyway. then we stop taking unbook and unnews on vfh, people will see the featured unbook and unnews on the front page, read them, vote for others, contribute, both sections will grow into proper sections as they deserve to be, rather than hidden side projects, and we'll all be happy.

also we need a thing like the recent articles box for unnews and unbook, so they're easier for people to find if they want to read one.

i know i can't force my opinion and can't force change on the site, i just feel that as long as news and book are mixed in with general articles and vfh they won't reach their potential, they need to be fully seperated into their own sections and then promoted to fuck on main page, and definitely added to the awards template. - jack mort | cunt | talkKodamaIcon.jpg - 03:01, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

How about you both take a voluntary timeout before someone older and wiser comes along and gives both of you a mandatory one?--Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 03:46, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

If by "sack" you mean like a bag, then yes, I believe we should. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 04:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Once he's in we should probably take his wallet as well, and his car, and i've got dibs on his shoes. if he's gonna ban us anyway we may as well make a profit :) wanna take turns bumming the sack? - jack mort | cunt | talkKodamaIcon.jpg - 04:47, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
What we need to do is toss some sort of wild angry animal monster creature of death in there with him (like, say, a possum), throw the sack into the river, and let them duke it out. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 05:01, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Jack about losing potential on UnBooks and such. I say we feature them in their own table on the main page with random.Spacer.gifSpacer.gifPremierTomMayfairChe.png RedPhone.png Unsoc.png Hammer and sickle.png 04:45, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

The problem with your idea, Jack, is that there is a much lower concentration of UnNews and UnBook articles than that of articles in the mainspace, even if these features were updated only once a week, you would eventually have to start putting up lower and lower quality articles. Also, featuring them for such a long period of time would give them more exposure than the VFH articles, which at times would probably be of much higher quality. No matter how you look at it, this plan fails. HOMESTAR ME!!! TURTLE ME!!! t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 20:50, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

no though, because people will write more unbooks and unnews if they're on the main page, both sections will really grow. and if unnews and unbooks are featured longer and get more exposure that'll just encourage more users to make more of their own. - jack mort | cunt | talkKodamaIcon.jpg - 22:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
In order for each section to grow to as many articles as there are in the mainspace the entire Uncyclopedia would have to quit adding articles to the mainspace and add them only to UnNews and UnBooks for 2 years, this is unrealistic. If they were popular it would be good enough to just post a feature on the seperate main pages and they would get as much attention as they deserve. Just look at Wikipedia, their WikiNews and WikiBook features aren't on the Wikipedia main page, because that wouldn't make any sense. Well it'd make just as little sense for us to do it. I didn't mean there would be as many unbooks and unnews as there are mainspace articles, i meant there would be as many, or almost, new unbooks or unnews articles as mainspace articles
That's even less likely to happen, just look at the New pages in the mainspace and then the Recent UnNews and Recent UnBooks. Right now there's a ratio of about 100:2:1, or 100:3:2:1 if 3 is the number of HowTo's, it's going to be impossible to bring that ratio anywhere near 1:1:1:1. If recognition is the issue, I would recommend lobbying to have an UnBooks link placed in the 'navigation' toolbar underneath the Uncyclopedia logo and/or somewhere on the Main Page. Also, for the record, I wouldn't be opposed to putting a featured UnNews article in the space where the 'In the news' section is currently, but it would have to be changed at the very least every day and be a new article each time. However, the current lack of UnBooks is just too great to have it's own spot on the main page. I've got an idea that'll satisfy everyone

On the main page, we've got the left hand side of the table with Featured Article and DYK. Why not change it so that it has Featured Article, then Featured UnNews Report, then Featured UnBook? And move DYK over to the right hand side. Plus, this would make the table no longer lopsided from the length of Anniversaries as a bonus. --User:Nintendorulez 18:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

There may not be too many good UnBooks. Crazyswordsman...With SAVINGS!!!! (T/C) 19:26, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
there are not likely to be when you have to scroll to the bottom of the front page and search for a link to find any information about them. if you make space for unbooks on the front page the project will expand to fill it - jack mort | cunt | talkKodamaIcon.jpg - 19:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
What he said. Nobody knows about Unbooks, so it isn't growing. Maybe we might have to keep the same Unbook up for a lot longer than feature articles/news, but it'll grow if it gets the attention on the main page. --User:Nintendorulez 00:43, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

My opinion

UnBooks and HowTos can be featured on the Main Page. UnNews articles should be featured on the front UnNews page. Crazyswordsman...With SAVINGS!!!! (T/C) 19:26, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmm...Okay. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 20:02, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Again, there just aren't enough UnBooks and HowTos to justify featuring them on the main page; unless that changes, they should stay under the Featured Article section. However, there *is* enough UnNews- if half a dozen articles are created every day, some of very high quality, it should be easy to pick the best article of the past two days and feature it for a couple of days. InfiniteMonkey 04:05, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Indeed, UnNews is the only on eof these sub-spaces with enough articles to justify having a featured article on the main page. HOMESTAR ME!!! TURTLE ME!!! t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 21:49, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
