Maladroit is the fourth studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on May 14, 2002 by Geffen Records. Produced by the band, it was their first album to feature bassist Scott Shriner, following the departure of former bassist Mikey Welsh in 2001. It continues the pop-oriented vibes of the Green Album.

Background and recording[edit]

While recording the album, 30 demo songs were leaked to the public by accident. Cuomo, not wanting to seem like an incompetent fool, says that he released them on purpose to get fan feedback to improve the songs and for them to pick their favorites to put on the album. Although being a lyrical genius, Cuomo cannot come up with names for albums hence the fact using colours for two of the three previous Weezer albums. So, in the vein for 'fan interaction', he lets one lucky fan to choose the name of the album, which of course was Maladroit. Rivers did not pay the fan royalties.

Reception[edit]

In their review, Red Heads gave the album a 4.5/5, saying "Finally, some good representation!" Pitchfork on the other hand gave it a 0.4224 out of 10, describing it as "Absolute clumsy mal-droppings." Upon listening to the album, members of Green Day reportedly asked "Does this sound like us?"
