OTTAWA, Canada -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for cheering a Ukrainian-born Second World War war veteran in Parliament this week. The 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka was applauded for fighting against Russia in that war, by Members of Parliament who had forgotten whom that means he was fighting for. After his appearance, he was exposed as a member of a locally recruited SS squad accused of war crimes who had managed to escape Europe and ended up in Canada.
Hunka had been invited to the Canadian House of Commons to see Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and share a strong vodka afterwards. The former Nazi soldier had been vocal in his hatred of the invasion of the country by Russia. Despite his age, Hunka had been an active presence on the internet and pro-Hitler bulletin boards such as FascBook. This was recently renamed to "X", only with four interesting modifications on the ends of the letter, which should have been a tip-off.
Opposition party leaders condemned Trudeau for "making Canada a laughing stock". Trudeau's party exhorted the opposition not to exploit the gaffe for political advantage; only, the opposition had just done so. Ultimately, the House of Commons moved to rewrite its register to pretend the episode never happened, but the required unanimous consent could not be reached. During the fireworks, Zelenskyy, who ironically is Jewish, said nothing but remained standing, with his hand out.
Trudeau explained, "I had no idea he was a Nazi. If he had worn a swastika armband, that would have made things clear and we would have instantly done the right thing."
